Welcome to Oswestry Livestock Auctions Christmas Fat stock update, and what a great effort by all and a fantastic entry of 6740 head of stock shown by 214 local vendors and purchased by 102 local and national buyers all securing the success of the day with a good trade all round. Undoubtedly the best show of welsh lambs by numbers and quality to be seen in the UK and once again the country’s leading market for light hill lambs, also as good a show of quality beef cattle as you could wish to see, a credit to all our vendors.
FAT CATTLE: (46)
A good show of quality cattle forward today with 24 cattle in the show, cattle were judged by Mr James Thomas of Rhos Wrexham, Champion beast shown by Mike Williams & Alice whose beast weighed 690kg and realised 450p/kg £3105 to Jones Family butchers Stansty, Reserve champion also from Mike Williams & Alice weighed 610kg and realised 385p/kg to the Judge D Thomas and family Rhos Wrexham. An overall market average of 222.5p/kg was achieved.

A record show of 5330 prime lambs at Oswestry today. This entry places Oswestry as having the biggest throughput of prime lambs within England this week, Don’t you think we must be doing something right!!. 380 lambs were entered into the Christmas show which was judged by Mr Gerallt Roberts of Fairfield. The show results as follows:

FAT EWES: (1189)
A good entry with some excellent runs of ewes interspersed amongst a strong showing of Welsh ewes. Overall trade was patchy with smaller ewes looking less money than that seen in the last fortnight. Overall average of £36 with a top price of £110 for a ewe from E J Jackson, St Martins. 29 Rams averaged £58 with a top price of £100 for tups from D Faulkner, Llandegla.

29 calves forward for this week’s sale and the trade was on fire for the best! Mr Andrew of Llanfair Caereinion topped the market with two belting Charolais bulls which at £400 and £395 a piece were hotly contended. Limousin bulls were up to £330 from Mr Jones of Ladyhill, West Felton, who also sold Limousin heifers to £315. Only two or three british blue bulls to go at today but best sold well to £325 from Mr Evans of Llanrhaeadr. Saler bulls from Mr Jones of Lythwell, West Felton sold to £260. In the natives, Mr Ede & Son of Sutton Green had a good do with his Aberdeen Angus’s which sold to £250 for the bulls and £215 for the heifers. Friesians were also a topping trade with the best from Mr Charmley of Guilsfield up at £198!
STORE CATTLE: (131)
A nice show of quality cattle was rewarded with a very pleasing trade. Top price was £1140 (230p/kg) going to Limousin heifers aged 19 months from R W & J L Edwards,
Llanarmon D C. 59 steers averaged £885 (193p/kg) & 70 heifers averaged £835 (187p/kg) with notable prices including:
£1050 (226p/kg) paid for 4 Limousin x steers aged 19 months sold by P L Harrison, Tregynon.
£1080 (223p/kg) & £1020 (224p/kg) paid for Charolais x steers aged 13 – 19 months sold by Edwards & Co, Cemmaes Road.
£940 (232p/kg) paid for 2 Charolais x heifers aged 18 months sold by A & L C Evans, Dinas Mawddwy.
£1020 (232p/kg), £1015 (232p/kg) & £900 (214p/kg) paid for Charolais x heifers aged 15 months sold by R G Jenkins & Co, Trefeglwys.

Usual entry of 25 cattle with an overall average of 115.5p/kg. Beef cows to 160p/kg, Dairy cows to 120p/kg, Beef heifers to 169p/kg, Bulls to 113p/kg keep them coming.
