FAT CATTLE: (38)
A superb turnout of cattle in our show today with 15 Cattle in the Show. We would like to thank our Judge Mr James Thomas of Thomas Butchers Rhos, who had a very difficult job in front of him. Champion Beast of the day was awarded to M J Williams Pontyperson for a 610kg Heifer selling to the Judge’s father Mr David Thomas at 350p/kg. Reserve champion was awarded to Messrs E Lloyd & Co Garthiaen for a Heifer weighing 490kg and selling at 275p/kg to Mr Glyn Morris on behalf of Messrs Birtwistle. The turnout was a credit to all our supporters and an overall market average of 212p/kg was achieved.

A good show of ewes with some quality consignments on offer. Another slight improvement in the trade with even some better meated Welsh ewes attracting more of a premium than seen recently. A very respectable overall average of £47 was reported with a top price of £100 going to an excellent run of Texel ewes from F A Jones, Babbinswood. 33 Rams averaged £74 with a top price of £130 for a Texel tup from D E Davies & Son, Four Crosses.

A decent show of calves sold to a much sharper trade particularly for females with several fresh buyers attending today. A seasonal entry was met with a strong trade with buyers still keen for cattle of all types. Top price was £1200 (213p/kg) paid for 5 British Blue steers aged 19 months sold by
P L Harrison, Tregynon.
Steers averaged £1002 (203p/kg) with heifers averaging £803 (187p/kg) with notable prices including: £1040 (208p/kg) & £960 (221p/kg) paid for a Blue and Limousin heifers aged 21 months and £975 (207p/kg) paid for a Limousin steer aged 22 months all sold by G R & D G Jones, Llanyblodwell. £1020 (204p/kg) for a Charolais steer and £1030 (208p/kg) for a Charolais heifer both aged 14 months sold by G E Davies & Sons, Pedairffordd. £910 (212p/kg) paid for a Charolais heifer aged 21 months sold by T Jones, Blodwell Bank, £930 (207p/kg) paid for a Blue heifer aged 18 months sold by J H Williams, Llansilin.
